Artist Statement

Hey my name is Avangeline lake and as a junior at the Herron School of Art and Design, my passion for art is deeply rooted in a love for drawing and illustration, with a particular focus on the human form. I love figurative works, and nude forms as well. The act of drawing allows me to be expressive, capturing both beauty, depth. Recently, I’ve embraced new artistic avenues aswell that have allowed me to expand my creative perspective. Ceramics has taught me the beauty of working with my hands, turning raw materials into tangible forms. Though it took me quite a while to get the hold of things I have found a new and lovely hobby. Photography, on the other hand, has sharpened my eye for composition, light, and storytelling and working alongside wonderful people. These art forms not only have improved my practice and artist tool belt but also deepen my understanding of how art can communicate across different mediums. And it is so hard to choose which ones I enjoy more.

Ultimately, my work reflects a fascination with the human experience. Drawing, illustration, and photography have become my most beautiful means of self-expression, each offering a unique way to bring my inner world, personal feelings and thoughts to life. I really enjoy the use of bright colors and how they can evoke emotions, create energy for my work, transforming each piece into something deeply personal and entirely my own. Every line, shape, and hue reflects a part of me that no one else can replicate an extension of my thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Through these mediums, I can create something lasting and uniquely mine, a visual language that speaks from my soul and invites others to glimpse the world as I see it. Trials and tribulations, including the challenges of artist’s block and personal family struggles, have definitely shaped my creative process, or stumped it at times. These experiences have taught me resilience, patience, and the importance of vulnerability in art. Being able to have an outlet has always been important for me, a therapeutic profession for sure. Artist’s block, though frustrating, has pushed me to explore new mediums and especially myself, allowing me to grow as a person and beyond my comfort zone. Family struggles have been huge, dealing with deaths have added depth and authenticity to my work, as they force me to confront and process my emotions I might otherwise avoid. Through this past year, I’ve learned that creativity isn’t just about producing art—it’s about navigating life’s curve balls and channeling them into something meaningful and beautiful. Something others can relate to or enjoy. My work has definitely become a reflection of my life and some might even say my love for it.
